Science Department 2018

|| September 3, 2018

Students, studying science related subjects at One Tree Hill over the years, have been guaranteed to be given a comprehensive knowledge of science and educated in a powerful and immersive environment. Science is divided into three main courses at OTHC - Chemistry, Biology, and Physics which are all taught by the skilfully trained teachers at the school. Its known that Science is a rapidly growing area of study in modern times and therefore, the Science Department at OTHC provide a new outlook on exploring and tackling complex ideas, providing students opportunities to be hands-on and fully comprehend their content in different ways, some of which include planning and executing trips; the Biology Ecology trip to The Rocky Shore being an example.

Mr Williams, the Head of the Science Department and recipient of ASG National Excellence Teaching Award believes that Science at OTHC allows students to obtain additional skills such as the ability to co-operate as a group as well as to work independently. Actively listening, critical analysis of content, communication to read and write and locate necessary information, and thinking from different perspectives are also encouraged. “Plans of methods which involve weaving science into real life situations rather than being primarily content driven is underway for upcoming department plans,” says Mr Williams. Several new staff members have been introduced this year due to the expanding number of students taking science, those being Ms Jonah (Biology) & Mr Gapes (Physics). “It’s a privilege having Ms Jonah and Mr Gapes with us as they bring a wealth of life and experience to students in a way which they can connect to, whilst providing a connection to the world we live in. Mr Cannell and Mrs Bandi have also done a fine job in taking over the Double Science program teaching knowledge in complex and high volume loads effectively,” reflects Mr Williams. We students are looking forward to the future of the Science Department and its developing plans!
