He aha te mea nui o tea ao? / What is the most important thing in the world?

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. / It is people, it is people, it is people.

Kim James heads the Student Services Team at One Tree Hill College.

Counselling

Kim is our head counsellor at One Tree Hill College. Penny Patten, Priscilla Tuhua and Kristin Fleming complete the counselling team. Our counsellors work according to the NZAC Code of Ethics and are expected to be professional, trustworthy and respect student confidentiality. They have regular supervision and professional development.

What is Counselling?

Through confidential counselling students are assisted to explore their difficulties and concerns, and are supported to find new solutions or ways of coping.

Students might seek counselling for a variety of reasons:

  • Difficulties at home or school
  • Low self esteem
  • Bullying or abuse
  • Friendship/relationship concerns
  • Grief and loss
  • Informed decision making
  • Support for problem solving and finding resolutions
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Managing stress or anger

Social Work

The school has the services of a full-time social worker through Family Works. Lorraine Florian is a very experienced social worker who can assist students and families with support and links to other agencies that can address specific needs.

Youth Work

The school employs a youth worker, Harrison Carr, to mentor and support students that may need extra help or support at different times during their schooling. Referrals to the youth worker are made by the counsellors or social worker.
