OTHC Student Library Council

Finally, after 10 years of trying a student library council was reformed with members elected under the guidance of Librarian Ms Andrew and Teacher in Charge Ms Ambanpola.  The Student Library Council (SLC) is a student group for students who are keen linguists and are passionate about keeping our library a vibrant centre of learning for the school community. They help around the library, supporting staff and students while also enhancing their own leadership skills. They do this by supporting teachers, organising books, and creating an overall safe environment for all the people that utilise this special space. The club stopped running during the COVID-19 days, so it is exciting news that its up and running again this year. The SLC is important because it gives an opportunity for students who have innovative mindsets and opinions to share ideas, connect with their peers and maintain healthy relationships in the process. The SLC team includes both junior and senior students who can be found in the library on rotating shifts stocking bookshelves.  Juziah an actively involved member says, “I love being on the council because I get to help people find books they’re excited about and make the library easier for everyone to use.”  Sara, another member says, “I feel very privileged to be a part of the SLC team and I take pride that I can help serve my school while creating a space for everyone to indulge in.  I’ve found that I have built really close relationships with the people I work with and feel very honoured.”  Ms Andrew says, “The library is a well-used space, used by both staff and students, who enjoy the welcoming atmosphere. The students we have chosen for the SLC do it willingly while being their authentic selves. They like being friendly, open minded and neutral, maintaining a positive environment in this working space.” Thank you to Ms Andrew and Ms Ambanpola who took the initiative to get this student group up and running again.
