Junior Academic Programme

Year 9

A strong start to secondary school is essential for every student. In the junior school, the focus is on developing effective work habits and building the foundational skills needed for success in senior learning. There is a particular emphasis on strengthening students’ literacy and numeracy to ensure they become confident and capable learners across all areas of the curriculum.

The Year 9 programme is carefully designed to meet the needs of students across a wide range of abilities. To support a smooth transition into secondary school, students remain in the same Learning Hub for most of their subjects. This structure allows a small team of teachers to work closely with each class and quickly get to know each student well.

At the beginning of the year, all students take Citizenship as one of their option subjects. This course focuses on developing an understanding of the core values of One Tree Hill College, as well as essential learning skills. It helps students settle into the college environment and build positive relationships within their whānau.

All Year 9 students study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education and Health throughout the year. In addition, they select five option subjects, providing opportunities to explore personal interests and try new areas of learning.

A range of provisions supports students with different learning needs. These include Ka Rere – our Year 9 enrichment option – as well as specialised ESOL and Learning Support Learning Hubs. With a diverse range of learners in every class, teachers promote progress for all students by adapting their teaching strategies and providing targeted support or extension through differentiated approaches.

Year 9 Scholarships

A number of Penrose Rotary Scholarships are offered to enrolling Year 9 student each year.

Year 10

The focus of Year 10 is to prepare students for the transition to more specialised study in the senior school.

All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education and Health. In addition, they select two option subjects per semester. These options provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, identify their strengths, and build a foundation for subjects they may wish to pursue in senior school.

Learning Support and ESOL hubs continue in Year 10, providing targeted support for students with additional learning needs.

High-performing students may have the opportunity to accelerate in Year 10 Mathematics, Science, and/or English. Through timetabled 8am classes, they engage in extended learning that builds on their regular Year 10 programme, enabling them to complete both the Year 10 and Year 11 curriculum within the same year. This acceleration pathway opens up a wider range of academic opportunities in Year 11 and beyond.
