One Tree Hill College Horticulture Subject 2026
This year, One Tree Hill College is proud to have introduced an exciting new subject into our Science curriculum - Horticulture. Horticulture is the scientific study of growing plants, unlike general agriculture, which often focuses on large-scale farming and livestock. Horticulture concentrates specifically on plant cultivation and the science behind healthy growth. Leading this course is teacher Ms Hindson, who’s passion for the natural world began at an early age. ” As a small child, I was always digging in our back yard, planting my own tomatoes from seed and roaming the local volcano in Mangere. This is what inspired me to teach horticulture and follow my belief that the more you learn about something, the more you appreciate it.” The Horticulture curriculum covers the importance of nutritious soil, how seeds are made, and the medicinal properties of local flora. This year the students will propagate plants and make some medicinal ointment from kawakawa leaves amongst other things. They will learn about the theory of horticulture as well. One of the students shared her experience of the class so far, “I enjoy horticulture because everyone is so lively and passionate about it, the practicals are also the highlight of my week”. Science Faculty Leader, Mr Gainsford commented on this new subject being made available to our students, " It is fantastic for our students to have the opportunity to learn about such an important part of New Zealand’s economy and culture. New Zealanders love growing things, and they love the fresh food that our soil provides. I am delighted that OTHC students will now have the chance to learn about that at school.”
