Get your shoes on for Champion of One Tree Hill

The Junior Leadership Programme at One Tree Hill College are introducing a new fundraising event we are calling the ‘Champion of One Tree Hill'. Locals are being invited to sign up to a ‘fun run or fun walk’. The event will take place on Sunday 30 August, starting at 10am and finishing no later than noon. The start/finish line is the grassed area of the Stardome Observatory at Cornwall Park. The "fun walk" is a 4km circuit that goes around Cornwall Park and around the summit of One Tree Hill. The "fun run" is the circuit repeated twice for a total of 8km.

The event is being organised to raise funds to buy equipment to support student participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award being offered at One Tree Hill College.

The costs associated with the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award can be expensive, and money is not always accessible to students in a low decile school. A $20 entry fee is being requested to enable people to participate in the event. All funds raised will go towards purchasing outdoor equipment that will be used by students that do the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award. Many more One Tree Hill College students will then be able to access and enjoy adventurous expeditions in the New Zealand bush.

The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award is a voluntary and non-competitive programme involving leisure activities for those 14-25 years of age. It gives young people chances to add other enjoyable aspects to their daily lives. It encourages friendship and increases skills and knowledge. It requires them to play sport, improve or learn a skill and give service to the community as well as taking part in adventurous expeditions and residential projects (gold level only).

The Year 9 -11 students organising the event are part of separate programmes at the college, the Junior Leadership Programme (JLP) and a Mentorship Group. The JLP consists of twenty one year 9 and 10 students honing their leadership skills. The mentor group has thirteen Year 11 school leaders that guide their younger counterparts. The planning of the event challenges student exposure to and understanding of leadership, communication and service to the community.
