The Interact Club 2024

|| August 22, 2024

The Interact Club, combined with the Student Volunteer Army, is a group of students who are passionate about helping others. They engage in voluntary work both within and outside of school and uphold the value of "service before self." Through the SVA app, students may track their volunteer hours and generate an activity record that they can include on their resumes when applying for scholarships and jobs. The Rotary Club of Penrose frequently provides financial support for the club and is intimately associated with the group. Any student is welcome to join the organization and attend meetings during lunchtimes. Students are responsible for offering themselves up for any volunteer work. “During our Thursday lunchtime meetings, students come together to interact with each other and plan volunteering events. Such events have included a beach clean-up, tree planting, assisting at the Cornwall District School Fiesta, visiting Ranfurly Retirement Village and hosting clothing drives,” coordinator and OTHC teacher Miss Scott says. “This year marks both my second year leading Interact and the second year that Interact and the Student Volunteer Army have been united. I believe Interact was running for a few years before I joined the school.”

She added, “The group's main purpose is to provide a space for students to socialize and engage in non-sports or non-arts-related activities. What makes it special is that anyone may join in, and no particular skills are needed.” Interact student Danielle Dazo summed up being a member of Interact, “Being a member of Interact Club has developed my independence, initiative, and teamwork skills, through working toward a collective goal of giving back to the community. Volunteering has provided me with a sense of gratification, whether it be beach clean ups, fundraising events, or supporting local charities. Interact Club has allowed me to have a positive impact on the community through the commitment of supporting and providing help for the people and public at large.”
