OTHC Interact Club 2025

Rotary Club of Penrose’s OTHC’s Interact Club members volunteered for a beach clean-up recently that was held at the Taumanu Reserve, on the Onehunga foreshore. The Interact Club is a school-based group that falls under the Rotary Club of Penrose umbrella and is dedicated to helping their local community. This beach clean-up activity is an annual event held by Hirepool to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. This year’s event was extra special as it took place during Seaweek, Aotearoa New Zealand’s annual celebration of the sea. The OTHC students along with many volunteers participated, and with the many families their children. They all worked together to protect the environment and create a safer space for the species that call it home. Co-leader of the Interact Club, Arya Godkhindi, emphasized the importance of cleaning up beaches, and said, “It helps us, it helps the community because people are more likely to go to beaches that are clean.” She also said that this clean-up benefits the environment by reducing waste that could harm marine life. The event was a huge success, leaving the beach much cleaner. Volunteers were provided with everything they needed, including a sausage sizzle, thanks to the Hirepool Sizzle Shack. One of the OTHC students mentioned, “Being a part of the Interact Club is both fun and meaningful, as we get to work as a team, supporting each other while taking action to help the environment. It feels great knowing that we’re making a difference and building friendships along the way.” This clean-up not only contributed to a healthier environment, but also promoted teamwork among participants, which makes it a truly rewarding experience for all involved.
