Year 12 Geography Trip 2025
June 12, 2025
The 12GEO class went to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing to collect data for their next assessment – ‘Conducting Geographic Research with Guidance’. The students took samples from Mt Ruapehu of vegetation heights at six different levels which were then to be analysed to see how plant life adapts to local conditions. They spent time going through the crossing from the start on Monday, through to Mt Ruapehu on the Tuesday. They also got to see where the Tangiwai Disaster occurred. On the trip they learnt about the different types of vegetation that surrounds the mountains at different altitudes, how wind speeds and temperatures affect the vegetation, soil depths, and general history of the mountains.
The students found the trip fun. It was a good opportunity to become closer their classmates, as well as learning new things about New Zealand. They were all adamant that they would love to go on the trip again to relive the experience again. They all considered the trip the best and enjoyed taking photos, making friends, exploring new places, and almost getting blown away by the wind at 1650m on Mt Ruapehu. They thank organisers Ms Scott, Ms McKnight, and Mr Cashmore for accompanying them on this fantastic experience.
