Year 13 Sociology Trip 2025
June 12, 2025
The Year 13 Sociology students were given the opportunity to visit the University of Auckland to learn about creating actions that lead to a successful campaign. They also heard about social actions taken by New Zealand activists that result in a campaign's success. Ms Pullein, Mr Chauhan and Ms Bhikharidas accompanied the students to the university. Students also got the opportunity to meet and question Pania Newton, an activist, co-founder, and spokesperson for the group ‘Save Our Unique Landscape’, which was a memorable experience as they got to hear from someone who had altered history for the land of Ihumātao. Students also listened to a presentation on how emotions play a role in determining the success or failure of a campaign, this was very worthwhile as it will help them in their upcoming assessment to plan and develop actions for campaigns Ms Pullein said that another positive of the trip was that a lot of the students are currently thinking about their next steps after school, so it was good timing to take the students onto the university campus. She said, “A two-hour lecture in a lecture room may have been overwhelming for secondary students, but it provided them with a glimpse of what university would be like and allowed them to consider whether it was right for them.” One student, Hala Al Mansour commented, "I enjoyed the lecture room. It has prepared me for next year because I plan to go to university."
